3.1 Tissues and organs Flashcards
What is a tissue
A group of similar cells working together
What is a cell
The building blocks of living organisms
What are unicellular organisms
Organisms only made up of a single cell
What are multicellular organisms
Organisms made up of lots of cells
What is an organ
A collection of tissues working together to perform a specific function
What are types of tissues and what are their functions
Muscular - contract to bring out movement,
glandular - contains secretory cells that can produce enzymes and hormones,
epithelial - covers outside of body and some internal organs
What are the tissues in the stomach
Muscular tissue - churn the stomach contents
Glandular tissue - produce digestive juices
Epithelial tissue - cover the outside and inside of the stomach
What are organ systems
groups of organs that work together to perform specific functions and form multicellular organisms
Give examples of organ systems
Digestive system, circulatory, gas exchange
How have the organs adapted in the organ systems to be efficient exchange surfaces
Large surface areas, short diffusion paths, rich blood supplies, mechanisms for ventilating surfaces or for moving materials to increase concentration gradient
What are the two functions of the pancreas?
- Makes hormones to control blood sugar
- Makes some enzymes to digest food
Contains two different tissues that perform these functions
