3.1 - Nervous System Flashcards
Nervous system deals with… What other system that works with it? Define this system
Deals with all electricity that runs our bodies.
Endocrine system - deals with all chemicals in body
Central nervous system
All the nerves and neurons in brain and spinal cord.
Smallest cell of nervous system?
Neurons
Nerves
Neaurons working together to function
Peripheral Nervous system
All other nerves and neurons everywhere else in the body are peripheral
Autonomic nervous system
All the nerves and neurons that run involuntary, automatic functions in our bodies
Ex - organs
Somatic nervous system
All the nerves and neurons that run voluntary functions in the body
(Skeletal, muscles)
Sympathetic system vs Parasympathetic system
Sympathetic - Responsible for fight or flight response (ex - heartrate, breathing rate, diversion of blood to skeletal/muscle system)
Parasympathetic - Calms down, and helps recover, from the sympathetic system
Synapse
Space between dendrites of one neuron and axon terminal of another neuron where neurotransmitters are sent across from neuron to neuron
Axon terminal
Neurotransmitters
Myelin sheath
Lipid that covers neuron to insulate the cell and also increase the speed of action potential
Axon
Sends the impulse or action potential
Polarized cell
At rest thete is way more Na and K (-70 mv) outside cell than inside
Threshhold
Minimum ammount of stimulus/nrg required for the cell to fire
All or none firing. Describe it and define the term.
Once threshold is met an impulse/action potential will fire
It won’t stop, slow, or get weak
