3.1 Interpreting The Text Flashcards
What is meant by the term ‘synoptic problem’?
The interrelated nature of the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke
What is meant by the term ‘marcan’ priority?
This is the idea that Matthew and Luke were authored by people with access to the gospel of mark and, therefore, they were influenced by it
How does source criticism approach biblical scholarship?
The study of the sources which were used to inform the forming of scripture, and in this case the canonical gospels
How does form criticism approach biblical scholarship?
The practice of analysing the texted by organising them by type or form
How does redaction criticism approach biblical scholarship?
The study of how the texts of the bible were arranged, edited or changed from the original by those who compiled the now-accepted order and canon
What is the 2-source hypothesis?
The idea that the interrelated nature of the synoptic gospels was caused by the consultation of two sources during the writings of the gospels of Matthew and Luke. These sources are widely believed to be the gospel of mark itself (this is known as ‘marcan priority’) and a hypothetical source, termed ‘Q’
In what way is the Griesbach hypothesis different to Marcan priority?
The griesbach hypothesis flips the idea of marcan priority on its head somewhat, arguing instead that the gospel of Matthew was written first, followed by Luke, and that these two texts where then used together to write the the gospel of mark
Give an example of a ‘proto-gospel’
The infancy gospels/ the gospels of Thomas
What is the 4-source hypothesis
This is a less popular hypothesis that refers to the idea that there are four sources for these gospels - namely Mark, Q, and two other sources specific to Matthew (known as M) and Luke (known as L)
Give an example of one of the four sources
M, Q, or. L
