3.1 biodiversity and the distribution of life Flashcards
What is a community?
All the plants and animals living in an ecosystem
What are abiotic factors?
non-living factors that can influence the community and its habitat. They affect the growth and distribution of organisms an ecosystem
name 8 abiotic factors
temperature light intensity CO2 concentration pH wind speed soil moisture humidity salinity (Salt concentration) NEVER the weather
Give examples of the types of interactions made by organisms
competition
mating
What is a food chain?
A diagram which shows a simple feeding relationship between organisms. it shows the flow of energy from one organism to the next.
What do the arrows on a food chain/web show?
The flow of energy from one level to the next
What is the definition of a habitat?
The place where an organism lives
What is the definition of species?
A group of living things that are able to interbreed and produce fertile offspring
What is a niche?
The role an organism plays within a community N nutrients needed by the organism I interactions with other organisms C competition with other organisms H helping the community E environment it can tolerate
What is a food web?
A diagram which shows the interconnections of food chains. It is a more complex diagram that shows the feeing relationships between a number of organisms
What is the definition of a population?
all the organisms of the same species living in the same area
What is the definition of biodiversity?
The variety of species within an ecosystem and their relative abundance
