2.4 reproduction Flashcards
What does the term haploid mean?
cells that contain one set of chromosomes
Are gametes haploid or diploid?
Haploid
What is the male gamete?
sperm
Where is sperm produced?
in the testes
What is the female gamete?
the egg
Where are the eggs produced?
in the ovaries
What does the male reproduction system consist of and what is each parts purpose?
- testes –>produce sperm
- sperm duct–>allows sperm to pass to the penis
- penis–>releases sperm from the body
What does the female reproductive system consist of and what is each parts purpose?
ovaries–>produce eggs
oviducts–>allow the eggs to pass to the uterus
uterus–>where the fertilised egg develops into a foetus
vagina–>where sperm are deposited
describe the process of fertilisation
the fusion of the sperm nucleus with the egg nucleus
Where does fertilisation take place in land animals?
the oviduct
Where does fertilisation take place with fish?
in the water
is a zygote haploid or diploid?
diploid
what is the male gamete produced in plants and where is it produced?
pollen - produced by the anther
What is the female gamete produced in plant and where is it produced?
ovule - produced by the ovary
What is the role of the stigma?
it is where the pollen lands
What is the role of the petals and the nectary?
can be used to attract insects
Describe pollination
when pollen is transferred form the anther of one plant to the stigma of another
Describe the process of fertilisation in plants
the growth of the pollen tube towards the ovule in the ovary and the fusion of the pollen nucleus with the ovule nucleus.

are animal zygotes haploid or diploid?
diploid
What does the term diploid mean?
cells that contain two sets of chromosomes
