What was Napoleon’s goal? What happened?
He wanted to bring the ideals of the new French freedom every country in Europe. Wherever his armies conquered, both serfs and Jews were free. The ghetto walls fell.
What did the people see Napoleon as?
Many people saw Napoleon as their liberator.
What was his code of laws known as? What did it guarantee?
His code of laws was known as the Napoleonic code, and it guaranteed freedom.
What was the assembly of notables?
In order to gain the support of Jews and to have some control over them, Napoleon called together an assembly of notables. He asked them questions about Jewish law, and attitudes of French Jews towards France.
What was the purpose of the Sanhedrin?
They were supposed to settle legal and religious questions and prove they could be loyal French citizens.
What happened to the Sanhedrin?
It was dissolved after a short amount of time. No affect on Jewish life.
What happened to jews after napoleons defeat?
The Jews lost their freedom, returning to the old ways it was very difficult.
