What did jews gain and lose from emancipation?
Jews gained legal rights in society, job opportunities, right her own land and the right to vote. They lost their communal autonomy which means control over your own community.
Where did jews live before emancipation?
They lived according to the community. They had their own self government. They lived I️n their Jewish communities. Communities ran themselves.

Who was emancipated first and why?
Sephardic jews then ashkénaze because they were wealthier, more dignified and more respected.
What did ashkénaze Jews have to give up in order to be emancipated?
They were money lenders and they had to give up 2/3 of the money that was owed to them. They only kept 1/3.
What were the Frenchmen complaining about?
They complained that the Jews were emancipated but weren’t mixing in. “If they want our rights they have to mix in and be with us.”
What did Napoleon do to make the Frenchman happy?
He called together the Sanhedrin. They determine how much the jews could mix in with non-Jews while still maintaining Jewish law
What happened after the Sanhedrin came?
The power of rabbis were now limited but they understood why. Intermarriage was permitted but they wouldn’t have a Jewish wedding and on the other hand, they would keep the non-Jew in the community.
What is herem?
(excommunication), if someone didn’t follow the laws of Judaism, they would be kicked out and have nowhere to go so it forced them to follow the laws
