Q

Rules for oxidation states

A
  • All uncombined elements are 0
  • The oxidation states of elements in a compound add up to its charge
  • The oxidation states of a monoatomic ion is equal to its charge

Q

Known oxidation numbers

A

Group 1 metals = +1, Group 2 metals = +2, Al = +3, H = +1 (except in metal hydrides e.g NaH), F = -1, Cl/Br/I = -1 (unless with O or F), O = -2 (unless in a peroxide or with fluorine)
