3: Redox I Flashcards
1
Q
What do oxidation states do?
A
Oxidation states show the total number of electrons added or removed from an element to reach its current state
2
Q
Rules for oxidation states
A
- All uncombined elements are 0
- The oxidation states of elements in a compound add up to its charge
- The oxidation states of a monoatomic ion is equal to its charge
3
Q
Known oxidation numbers
A
Group 1 metals = +1, Group 2 metals = +2, Al = +3, H = +1 (except in metal hydrides e.g NaH), F = -1, Cl/Br/I = -1 (unless with O or F), O = -2 (unless in a peroxide or with fluorine)
4
Q
What is oxidation?
A
A loss of electrons
5
Q
What is reduction?
A
A gain of electrons
6
Q
What do oxidation agents do
A
Gain electrons
7
Q
What do reduction agents do
A
Lose electrons
8
Q
Definition of disproportionate reaction
A
A reaction which have an element which is simultaneously oxidised and reduced
