3. PSR Identification - ATM1 Flashcards

1
Q

Define Identification

A

Q

What is the turn method for identification?

A
  • Ascertain the aircraft’s heading.
  • Observe the aircraft’s track for a period of time.
  • Correlate the observed movement of a particular Position Indication with:
  • The acknowledged execution of an instruction to alter heading by at least 30 degrees.

Q

What is Turn Method 2?

A

One or more changes of heading of at least 30 degrees, as instructed by another controller, or

One or more changes of heading of at least 30 degrees, reported by the pilot.

Q

(TOASTC?)
What considerations should be there be before the Turn Method? (7)

A
  • Terrain
  • PSR coverage
  • Other surveillance returns
  • Rules of the Air
  • Proximity of Controlled airspace boundary
  • In areas where AC commonly make heading changes for Nav purposes (to a VOR)
  • Verify the correct AC has executed the identification turn if there is more than one AC in the area.

A turn for identification does not constitute the provision of a surveillance service.

Q

What is the Departing Aircraft Method?

A

Identification is achieved by observing and correlating the Position Indication of a departing aircraft to a known airborne time.

Identification is to be achieved within 1nm of the end of the runway used.

(Unless (in some states) otherwise authorised by the Authority)

Q

What considerations should be there be before the Departing AC Method? (4)

A
  • AC overflying the airfield
  • AC making a Missed Approach
  • AC departing from an adjacent runway
  • AC holding overhead the airfield

Q

What is the position Report Method?

A

By correlating a particular radar position indication (AC) with an aircraft reporting its position over, or as bearing and distance from,

  • Exact reporting point
  • VRP or other geographical location
  • a point shown on the situation display
  • by ascertaining that the track of the particular radar position is consistent with the aircraft path or reported heading;

Reported position must be within known PSR coverage

Q

What is Position Report Method 1a?

Q

What is Position Report Method 1b?

A

A notified fix defined by VOR radials or a VOR radial and a bearing from an NDB

A position defined by a VOR radial and a range from a co-located DME.

At a particular distance and on a particular radial from a co-located VOR/DME or TACAN.

Q

What is Position Report Method 2?

A

Over a notified visual reference point or prominent geographical feature, in either case approved for the purpose and displayed on the situation display.

ATS authority may prescribe additional
conditions.

15
Q

What considerations are there for Position Report Method?

A

Use an alternative method if there is any doubt concerning the identification.

The appropriate ATS authority may prescribe conditions for the application of these methods, e.g.:

  • a level or levels above which this method may not be applied in respect of specified navigation aids; or
  • a distance from the radar site beyond which this method may not be applied.

16
Q

How can misidentification happen? (4)

A
  • Incorrect assumptions concerning identity
  • Identification procedures not correctly applied
  • Turn Method - two aircraft make co-incident turns
  • Pilot makes inaccurate position report which
coincides with position of another aircraft
17
Q

What can be done if an AC is misidentified? (6)

A
  • Tell the Pilot, and instruct to resume own navigation
  • Climb aircraft to safe level if necessary
  • Provide vertical separation from other aircraft and
    pass essential traffic information
  • Continue to search for aircraft. Make use of Direction finding (DF) facilities (triangulation)
  • Cancel any descent clearance and advise pilot to climb back to original level
  • Lost Identity
18
Q

What is a point?

A

The term “a point” refers to a geographical point suitable for the purposes of identification. It is normally a reporting point defined by reference to a radio navigation aid or aids.
- VOR
- VRP
- Geographical location

19
Q

What shall be done if identification is lost?

A

A pilot shall be advised whenever identification is lost
