Aircraft in the traffic circuit shall be controlled
to provide the separation minima outlined in
7.9.2, 7.10.1, 7.11 & 5.8 (which have been
covered in previous lessons), except that:

A
  • Aircraft in formation are exempted from the
    separation minima with respect to separation
    from other aircraft of the same flight.
  • Aircraft operating in different areas or different runways on aerodromes suitable for simultaneous landings or take-offs are exempted from the separation minima; (parallel approaches)
  • separation minima shall not apply to aircraft operating under “military necessity” in accordance with 16.1 (ICAO Doc 4444, Chapter 16) (red arrows)

What shall an aircraft have to do if it enters a traffic circuit of it doesn’t have proper authorisation?

A

It shall be permitted to land if its actions indicate that it so desires.
If circumstances warrant, aircraft which are in
contact with the controller may be instructed by the
controller to give way so as to remove as soon as
possible the hazard introduced by such
unauthorized operation.
In no case shall permission to land be withheld
indefinitely.

In cases of emergency it may be necessary, in
the interests of safety, for an aircraft to enter a
traffic circuit and effect a landing without
proper authorisation.
Controllers should recognize the possibilities of
emergency action and render all assistance
possible.

Priority for landing shall be given to?

A
  • Air Ambulance, Hospital Aircraft or Life Flights
    Aircraft carrying any sick or seriously injured persons requiring urgent medical attention;
  • Search & Rescue Aircraft
  • Heads of State or VVIPs/VIPs
  • Aircraft Emergencies
    An aircraft which anticipates being compelled to land because of factors affecting the safe operation of the aircraft (engine failure, shortage of fuel, etc.);

What is ATIS?

A

Automatic Terminal Information Service

  • Information to help pilot make decisions about his
    approach to land or take-off.
  • Message should not exceed 30 seconds where practicable.
  • Can be either Departure or Departure / Arrival ATIS.
    (greater frequency protection required)
  • Messages consecutively coded using phonetic alphabet.
  • Rapid weather changes given direct through ATC.
  • ATCOs must obtain readback of pressure settings.
    Pilots to acknowledge ATIS receipt.
  • If non-current letter given details to be passed by ATC.

Enables reduced RTF loading.

What shall an ATIS contain? (15)

A
  • Name of aerodrome;
  • Arrival and/or departure indicator;
  • Contract type, if communication is via D-ATIS;
  • Designator;
  • Time of observation
  • Type of approach(es) to be expected
  • The runway(s) in use; any potential hazard
  • Significant runway surface conditions and, if appropriate, braking action;
  • Holding delay, if appropriate;
  • Transition level, if applicable;
  • Other essential operational information;
  • Current METAR.
  • Any available information on significant meteorological phenomena in the approach and climb-out areas including wind shear, and information on recent weather of operational significance;
  • Trend forecast, when available;
  • Specific ATIS instructions.
