Division of Air Traffic Control Services
The responsibility of Area Control Service shall be provided by;
•Area Control Centre (ACC)
Or by the unit providing approach control service
–in the control zone or
–in a control area of limited extent which is designed primarily for the provision of approach control service where no Area Control Centre is established.
The responsibility of Approach Control Service shall be provided by;
- by an Approach control unit, when it is necessary or desirable to establish a separate unit.
- by an aerodrome control tower or an ACC, when it is necessary or desirable to combine under the responsibility of one unit the functions of the approach control service and those of the aerodrome control service or the area control service
The responsibility of Aerodrome Control Service shall be provided by;
By an Aerodrome Control Tower
The task of providing specified services on the apron, e.g. apron management service, may be assigned to an aerodrome control tower or to separate unit.
An Air Traffic Control Service shall be provided:
To all IFR flights in airspace Classes A, B, C, D & E.
To all VFR flights in airspace Classes B, C, and D.
To all special VFR flights.
To all aerodrome traffic at controlled aerodromes.
Define FIC?
Flight Information Centre
A unit established to provide FIS and alerting
service.
Define FIS?
Flight Information Service
A service provided for the purpose of giving advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights.
How do we apply FIS?
FIS shall be provided to all aircraft which are likely to be affected by the information and which are:
- AC provided with an ATC service, or AC known to relevant air traffic services units.
FIS does not relieve the pilot-in-command of an aircraft of any responsibilities and the pilot-in-command has to make the final decision regarding any suggested alteration of flight plan.

By a FIC, unless responsibility for providing such services is assigned to an ATC unit having adequate facilities for the exercise of such responsibilities.

How do we get info to pilots?
- A general call, unacknowledged transmission to all AC concerned.
- Broadcast.
- Data link.
- Directed transmission on the initiative of the appropriate ATS unit to an aircraft ensuring that receipt is acknowledged.
What is VOLMET?
Meteorological information for aircraft in flight.
Includes;
- TAF
- SIGMET
- METAR
Broadcast over HF & VHF by civil and military stations divided into regions.
Each region having a number of VOLMET broadcast stations which all broadcast on the same frequency(s)
What is an ATIS?
Automatic Terminal Information Service.
The automatic provision of current, routine information to arriving and departing aircraft throughout 24 hours or a specified portion thereof:
D-ATIS - Data link-automatic terminal information service. The provision of ATIS via data link.
Voice-ATIS - Voice-automatic terminal information service. The provision of ATIS by means of continued and repetitive voice broadcasts.
What is an Alerting Service?
- An alerting service is provided to notify appropriate organisations regarding AC in need of SAR aid and assist such organisations as required.
ALERTING SERVICE shall be provided by the air traffic services units:
- For all AC provided with air traffic control service;
- All other AC having filed a flight plan or otherwise known to the air traffic services (so far as practicable).
- To any AC known or believed to be the subject of unlawful interference
Define AIR TRAFFIC ADVISORY SERVICE
“A service provided within advisory airspace to ensure separation, insofar as practicable, between aircraft which are operating on IFR flight plans”.
