Mechanism of narcolepsy/cataplexy:
Orexin dysfunction (receptor problem or orexin deficiency)
Cataplectic attack:
sudden and complete atonia
Diagnostic findings of narcolepsy/cataplexy:
EEG shows low amp, fast waves
Presentation of behavioral disorders as paroxysmal events:
Continuous pacing, licking, lip smacking, tail chasing, etc
Animal normal between episodes
No alteration in consciousness
Mechanisms of transient vestibular attacks:
Systemic hypertension, hypothyroidism (may be ischemic), otitis media/interna, cerebellar malf
Examples of Paroxysmal Dyskinesias:
Cramp/Hypertonicity in Scottish Terriers
Gluten Sensitive Dyskinesia
Chinook Seizures
Presentation of Scottie Cramp:
Stiffness, bunny hopping, triggered by stress/excitement etc
Signalment of idiopathic head tremor:
Bostons, bulldogs, boxers, dobeys
Onset <4y
