3 P's Flashcards
What are the 3 P’s?
Prediction, Protection and Planning
What is prediction?
Prediction uses historical evidence and monitoring to make predictions about tectonic hazards.
How is prediction used?
Volcanic activity can be tracked and monitored through science and can have accurate predictions be made.
Earthquakes cannot be accurately predicted, as they lack clear warning signs, but at risk areas can be identified.
What is planning?
Planning is having a plan ready in the event of a hazard, for example evacuation methods or how recourses will be spread out.
How is planning used?
Hazard maps have been made showing which areas will be most effected by volcanic activity and earthquakes. This can be used to plan which areas should be protected.
What is protection?
Protection is designing buildings or other structures specifically to protect against hazards.
How is protection used?
Earth embankments and explosives can divert lava from volcanic eruptions.
The effects of Earthquakes can be reduced by constructing buildings specifically to be resistant, such as with shock absorbers, reinforced supports and open areas for evacuation.
