3 OSI Model Flashcards
What is the OSI model?
Open Standard Interconnection: It is made up of 7 Different Layers
It was developed by the International Organization for Standardization, (ISO) standards.
What are the Layers of the OSI Model?
From TOP to BOTTOM:
7) Layer 7 Application Layer
6) Layer 6 Presentation Layer
5) Layer 5 Session Layer
4) Layer 4 Transport Layer
3) Layer 3 Network Layer
2) Layer 2 Data Link Layer
1) Layer 1 Physical Layer
Describe Layer 1 the PHYSICAL Layer
this is where bits are transmitted across the network and includes all the physical
and electrical characteristics of this network. So, this is going to tell us whether we’re using an ethernet network, whether we’re using fiber or copper cables,
whether we’re using Cat 5 or Cat 6, and even if we’re using radio frequency in the case of Wi-Fi. Regardless of which method we’re using to send our data across this first layer, it’s always going to occur as Binary BITS. 1s and 0s
The Physical Layer also includes all the different Physical Topologies.
Describe Layer 2 the DATALINK Layer
Describe Layer 3 NETWORK Layer
Describe Layer 4 the TRANSPORT Layer
Describe Layer 5 the SESSIONS Layer
Describe Layer 6 the PRESINTATION Layer
Describe Layer 7 the APPLICATION Layer

Describe Encapsulation.
Encapsulation is the process of wrapping data with protocol information at each layer of the OSI model as it passes down the networking stack. Layer 7–1
Describe Decapsulation
Decapsulation is the process of removing that protocol information layer by layer
as the data unpacks itself on the receiving end. Layer 1–7
What is Transition Modulation
Transition modulation is a change from one state to another. For example from a 1 Bit to a 0 Bit with the use of electrical voltage or a fiber light.
