3 L3) Layer 3 The Network Layer Flashcards
What is Layer 3?
Network Layer L3
What is the purpose of the Network Layer (3)
The Network Layer is all about Routing. Routing is how to forward Data traffic. Routing is sometimes called Switching. Do not confuse Switching with Switches, the physical device.
What is an IP Address?
An IP Address is a Logical address that is either an IPV 4 and/or an IPV 6 or both addresses. Both IPV 4 & IPV 6 are Layer 3 Protocols. All clients on a network have an IP address.
What is an IPV 4 address?
An IPV 4 address consists of a dotted octet notation. An example of this is 172.196.127.16
What are the 3 ways of Routing?
Routing consists of 3 ways to forward information.
1) Packet Switching
2) Circuit Switching
3) Message Switching
What is Packet Switching?
Packet Switching is the most common form of Forwarding Data and is also known as Routing. Packet Switching is when Data is divided into Packets and then forwarded to
What is Circuit Switching?
Circuit Switching is when the Data takes a dedicated communications link established between 2 devices, the same path during the entire connection. An example is a phone call connection.
What is Message Switching?
Message Switching is when all the Data is divided into messages which may be stored and then forwarded, more like email.
