3 Network Interfaces and Cables Flashcards
A system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network, with protocols to control the passing of information and to avoid simultaneous transmission by two or more systems.
Ethernet
Is an operating unit that develops global standards in a broad range of industries.

layer is used by devices and cabling.
Physical Layer
layer used for the Media Access Control (MAC).
Data Link Layer
3 TYPES OF CABLES
- Coaxial Cables
- Twisted Pair Cables
- Fiber Optic Cables
is an electrical cable with a copper conductor and an insulator shielding around it and braided metal mesh. Also known as Coax
Coaxial Cables
4 PARTS OF COAXIAL CABLES
- Copper Conductor
- Insulator
- Braided Mesh
- Protected Plastic Layer
a central conductor which consists of copper. The conductor is the point at which data transmits.
Copper Conductor
a dielectric plastic insulation around the copper conductor. Used to maintain the spacing between the center conductor and shield.
Insulator
helps to shield from electromagnetic interference. The braid provides a barrier against EMI moving in and out of the cable.
Braided Mesh
an external polymer layer, which has a plastic coating. Uses to protect internal layers from damages.
Protected Plastic Layer
have two conductor that are generally made up of copper and each conductor has insulation and twisted together.
Twisted Pair Cables
2 TYPE OF TWISTED PAIR CABLE
- Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cables
- Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cables
are Twisted Pair Cables broadly used in the telecommunications and computer industries as ethernet cables and telephone wires.
