How might we classify people by socioeconomic status (4)? Suggest some ways we used to measure the classifications.
- Income e.g. households, car ownerships
- Education e.g. levels, degrees
- Profession e.g. Registrar General Scheme, National Statistic Socio-Economic Classification
- Townsend Deprivation e.g. Census data
Suggest reasons why individuals at lower socioeconomic status are more likely to have poor health (5).
- Tend to have negative definition of health therefore don’t take actions unless symptoms are seen
- Normalise illness
- Less able to access and integrate health services
- More likely to engage unhealthy behaviours
- Use services that have lower quality
