3. FIRE & SMOKE Flashcards
FIRE PREVENTION
GALLEY-galley electrical panels- no fault indications and tripped circuit breakers
LAVATORY-disposal containers and smoke detectors - not blocked with paper/debris/waste build up
PASSENGER CABIN-unusual odors (called fumes-e.g. burnt oil like smell, passengers smoking cigarettes
BCF/HALON
is a liquefied gas that extinguishes the fire by chemically interrupting a fire’s combustion chain, as opposed to physically smothering the fire. Halon accomplishes flame retardation by enclosing oxygen molecules.
HAFEX
Halon Alternative Fire Extinguisher
Small light, fire extinguisher, effective in fighting fires
Halogen free
PBE (Protective Breathing Equipment)
Smoke Hoods protect the user’s eyes and respiratory system against heat, smoke, and/or toxic gases. It can as well provide supplemental oxygen in case of decompression.
Fireproof /Protective gloves
They are made of heat resistant material, during fire-fighting to protect hands, remove hot (not burning) material or burnt debris in order to get to the source of the fire.
FIRE TRIANGLE
REMOVING ONE OF THESE THREE ELEMENTS WILL EXTINGUISH THE FIRE
-heat
-oxygen
-fuel
Class A
Ordinary combustibles
Wood ,paper ,cloth
Class B
Flammable liquids
Grease oil, paint ,solvent
Class C
Live electrical equipment
Electrical panel,monitor ,wiring
GENERAL FIRE-FIGHTING PROCEDURE
-Alert other Cabin Attendant for assistance and to bring protective and additional equipment
-Check for heat - use the back side of the hand
-Locate and attack fire immediately
—Fight fire aggressively
-Commander must be Informed
CIRCUIT BREAKERS
Are automatic electrical switches which protect an electrical circuit from damage in case of an electrical overload/over-heating. They basically interrupt the current flow by for example tripping out of the normal position.
Found in flight deck and galleys
Do not re-engage it and inform Commander immediately.
SMOKE
Smoke and hot gases will rise vertically until they strike a roof or ceiling, then they will spread sideways. This is called mushrooming. Due to limited height within an aircraft fuselage this effect takes place quickly.
The type and color of smoke can sometimes give an indication as to the material involved in the fire, e.g. rubber and plastic give off a large volume of thick, black smoke.
Mouse outline
Breathing through wet towels will effectively reduce the ingestion of toxic gases.
FUMES
Are particles made of vapor, dust or smoke
Fumes are very fine solid particles suspended in the air, which are Toxic
oily, sweet smell
RESCUE AND FIRE-FIGHTING SERVICES (RFFS)
This special category of fire-fighting involves incident response, hazard mitigation, fire-fighting and saving human lives, evacuation and possible rescue of passengers and crew of an aircraft involved in an aerodrome ground emergency.
Response time must not exceed three (3) minutes
