3. Expression and communication faces voices and body posture. Flashcards
What are the three theories of facial expression?
Central theories
 Peripheral theories
Functional theories
Define central theories of facial expression
Ekman leaves that facial expressions are the result of emotional feeling It is also universal
What are criticisms of central theories ?
 1. People can lie be sarcastic or their face doesn’t match the actual feeling.
- Using ekmans physiological methods to measure racism expressions is long, complex and expensive
What are peripheral theories?
Facial feedback coming from the body (extension of James Lange)
E.g attack holding pen in mouth led different emotions. Smiling w pen meant more joy and not smiling w pen meant mess joy
What are functions use of emotion?
Emotion serve a purpose, such as bearing teeth and get ready to fight
E.g: Darwin
What is the basic approach?
Certain emotions are felt the same way by everyone (universal).
What is or Tony system of basic nation?
Set an emotions are underlined by primitives for those primitive animations. E.g. fear and anger, derived from the stress, But. Stress isn’t an emotion
What factors make up the dimensional approach?
Valence and arousal
How do you differences between basic emotions, dimensional emotions get measured?
Basic use physiological measures where is dimensional, use things like questionnaires or general dimensions to find positive vs negative
What is evidence for universality?
Children with sensory impairments, displaying the same emotions, so they are not learnt
Ekmans New Guinea study
What are some arguments against universality?
- Russell with a limited range of responses, glitter, force choices and inflated sense of agreement
- Russell also questions whether facial expressions, aspect of them,or both are being judged
- Ecological converging and internal validity issues. E.g forced choice and posed faces look artificial
What is the Simon Thomas find a vault voices
Sure, vocal bursts, communicate emotions like anger, fear and sadness seldom studied states like awe compassion interest and embarrassment
What does getting people to speak in an emotional tone cause?
People to speak in the stereotypical way
Define Sherer’s vocal secs theory
Emotional effects on emotional expression result from physiological effects of secs
This is a dimensional approach as you go in an order for the secs
Secs are different verbsl sounds
What are the 5 checks and their effect on voice?
1, novelty.
 Interruption, inhalation silence
- Pleasantness
Change in pharynx, Wide or Norris voice
- Goal significance

Relax, versus tense voice. change in amplitude - coping potential.
Tense vs lax voice - Norm compatibility
Wide full versus narrow thin voice
