3. Airway management and ventilation Flashcards
How do you recognise airway obstruction?
LOOK ?see-saw pattern ?accessory muscle use ?misting mask
LISTEN
FEEL
May see child is having difficulty in breathing/signs of increased WOB
What is the suction pressure that should not be exceeded in infants?
120mmHg
Where should you measure guedel for size?
From level of incisors to angle of jaw
Where should you measure a NPA for size?
from nostrils to tragus of ear
What is the preferred device to deliver oxygen to a seriously ill child who is breathing spontaneously?
Oxygen mask with reservoir
This mask has 3 valves and is called a ‘non-rebreather’
When is positive pressure ventilation required?
When child stops breathing completely, or when their spontaneous ventilation is inadequate
What RR should you aim for when providing positive pressure ventilation?
12-30 breaths per minute (higher in younger)
What can excessive ventilation volume cause?
stomach distension (and reduced ventilation) -> GORD -> aspiration
Even when focussing/doing it properly you can still cause gastric distension so a nasogastric tube should be placed as soon as safe and possible
What position should the head be in for an infant when using a bag valve mask?
Neutral
What position should the head be in for a child when using a bag valve mask?
Sniffing the morning air
