3/2 Lecture - Behavior Group Living Flashcards
Community Ecology
Study of interactions among species in communities on many spatial and temporal scales
Community
Assemblages of interacting populations of the species living within a particular habitat
Disease Ecology
Study of the interaction of the behavior & ecology of hosts within the biology of pathogens.
- Influenced by 3 factors:
Environment, Host, Parasite.
Sociobiology
examines behavior in evolutionary context
- social evolution
Socioecology
Examines how ecology influences behavior
Crypsis
Camouflage, often associated with primates who are nocturnal, solitary, or live in small groups
2 Strategies to reduce Predation*
1) Crypsis
2) Group Living
strategy
a set of traits that are designed to solve a particular adaptive problem
Mating effort
all of the activities that are related to conception, including the effort required to find mates and gain access to them
Parenting effort
all of the activities that are related to offspring care after conception occurs
A female’s reproductive success depends on
her ability to obtain enough resources to support herself and her offspring.
primiparous
First-time
multiparous
females who have already produced offspring
transitive
When females can defeat all the females ranked below them and none of the females ranked above them
estrus
heat; heighted sexual arousal and activity
