3/2- Lab 4-Exam 2 Flashcards
What is the Brownian movement?
Molecules of any liquid in constant motion due to kinetic energy of molecules
Small in size
Vibrations cause collisions
Random movements
What is diffusion?
Movement of molecules down the concentration gradient
Passive process
No energy required
What are the factors that affect the rate of diffusion?
1) phase- has or liquid
2) concentration
3) molecular weight (particle size)
4) temperature
What is osmosis?
Water moving down it’s concentration gradient through a semi-permeable membrane
What is an osmometer?
Osmosis being demonstrated when 2 solutions are separated by dialysis tubing
What is hypertonic?
More solution
What is hypotonic?
Less solution
What is isotonic?
2 solutions that are equally concentrated
What happens in an isotonic environment?
The cells are happy because inside and outside the cell are equal
What happens in a hypertonic environment?
Water inside the cell leaves to try and equalize the more amounts of solute outside the cell
Cell shrivels up from lose of water
What happens in a hypotonic environment?
Water outside the cell goes into the cell to try to equalize the solution inside the cell
Water enters cell and it swells
What is lyse mean?
The cell blows up because it kept sucking up water
Lysing of the blood is called?
Hemolysis
What is crenation?
A wrinkled cell because it lost water
What is Turgor pressure?
When water enters the cell and the large central vacuole swells
