3:19 - visual organization & interpretation Flashcards
gestalts (gestalt theory of perception)
combining a cluster of sensations into a whole to create an organized image
figure
distinguished object of focus
ground
the background that the figure is prominent from
proximity
grouping nearby objects together - like seeing 3 sets of 2 lines instead of 6 seperate lines
continuity
perceiving smooth/continuos patters rather than discontinuous ones
depth percetpion
seeing objects in three dimensions even though the image that strikes the retina is 2d. how we judge distance.
visual cliff
used to test depth perception in infants
binocular cues
judging the distance between two objects
retinal disparity
a bioncular cue but judge depth instead of distance
monocular cues
depth cues for each eye seperately - judge how close we are to something
phi phenomenon
an illsion of movement created when two or more adjacent lights blink on & off in succession.
perceptual constancy
perceving objects as unchanging
color constancy
perceiving familar objects as having consistent color, even if changing illumination alters the wavelengths reflected by the object
size constancy
perceiving objects as having a constant size even when moved
shape constancy
perceiving objects as having the same shape even when moved to be a different shape
