What is psychosis?
A loss of contact with reality, including delusions and hallucinations.
What are positive symptoms of psychosis?
Delusions and hallucinations.
What are negative symptoms of psychosis?
Avolition, alogia, anhedonia, asociality, affective flattening.
What are disorganized symptoms?
Disorganized speech/behavior, inappropriate emotions, lack of insight.
What is schizophrenia?
A chronic form of psychosis with persistent reality distortion and odd behavior.
DSM-5 criteria for schizophrenia?
At least 2 of 5 symptoms for 1+ month (e.g., delusions, hallucinations), lowered functioning, signs for 6+ months.
What must be ruled out before diagnosing schizophrenia?
Mood disorders with psychotic features, substance/medical causes, and autism (unless delusions/hallucinations are present).
Onset pattern for schizophrenia?
Often begins with a 1–2 year prodromal phase before meeting full criteria.
Common outcomes of schizophrenia?
~50% single episode, 35% recurrent episodes, 22% no return to baseline.
Causes of schizophrenia?
Genetics, dopamine dysfunction, cannabis use in teens, low SES, possible seasonal birth effect.
Common schizophrenia treatments?
Antipsychotic meds, CBT, family therapy, social skills training.
What is schizophreniform disorder?
Same symptoms as schizophrenia, but duration <6 months.
What is schizoaffective disorder?
Schizophrenia + major mood episode, with psychosis present even when mood symptoms are absent.
What is delusional disorder?
One or more delusions lasting 1+ month, no other schizophrenia symptoms, and normal functioning.
What are the types of delusional disorder?
Erotomanic, grandiose, jealous, persecutory, somatic, mixed, unspecified.
What is brief psychotic disorder?
Psychotic symptoms lasting 1 day to 1 month, usually with identifiable stressor or postpartum onset.
