-Defined as - “a random accumulation of certain quasi-scientific and technological information acquired from western Europe through restricted contact with the Dutch or indirectly through the Chinese trade in Nagasaki”

-was expensive, took a long time, was elaborate, and was more expensive the farther a daimyo was from Edo
-was used to keep daimyo in check
How Sakin Kotai exercised power
-kept daimyo financially weak
-limited a daimyo’s contact with their domain/province
-“hostage system”

-families of daimyo had to stay in the capital even when the daimyo would go back to the domain
-caused future leaders to be at a distance and not know their future domain
-if daimyo wanted to rebel, shogun could manipulate daimyo’s family
