3 Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
Proteins that act as biological catalyst, increasing reaction rate of biological processes without being used up in the process
What does catalytic activity of an enzyme rely on?
On its tertiary structure, a change in the three-dimensional shape denature the enzyme
Where does the selectivity of enzymes come from?
From their shape and functional group in active site, allowing them to only been with certain substrates
What are the four types of active site and substrate interactions?
Dispersion forces interaction
Ion dipole
Hydrogen bonding
Ionic interactions
What can denature an enzyme?
Increase temperature
A change in PH
The addition of heavy metal ions
How can the RF value be determined?
Distance from origin by component divided by the distance, moved by solvent from the origin
