3. 1. 5. 1 DNA and RNA Structure Flashcards
What does DNA do?
Holds genetic information.
What does RNA do?
RNA transfers genetic information from DNA to ribosomes.
What are ribosomes formed from?
Ribosomes are formed from RNA and Proteins.
What is both DNA and RNA classed as?
DNA and RNA are both polymers of nucleotides.
What are nucleotides formed from?
A pentose sugar (circle), a nitrogen-containing organic base (rectangle) and a phosphate group (Pentagon).
What are the components of a DNA nucleotide?
Deoxyribose, a phosphate group and one of the organic bases (adenine, cytosine, guanine, or thymine)
What are the components of an RNA nucleotide?
Ribose, a phosphate group , and one of the organic bases (adenine, cytosine, guanine, uracil)
How is a phosphodiester bond formed?
A condensation reaction between two nucleotides forms a phosphodiester bond.
Describe a DNA molecule.
A DNA molecule is a double helix with two polynucleotide chains held together by hydrogen bonds between specific complimentary base pairs.
What is a RNA molecule?
An RNA molecule is a relatively short polynucleotide chain.
