2nd qtr: Asexual and Sexual reproduction Flashcards
A form of reproduction that requires only one parent and does bit involve sex cells. This does not involve the union of two reproductive cells called gametes or sex cells.
Asexual Reproduction
An organism grows and duplicates its genetic material then divides into two.
Binary Fission
Form if asexual reproduction i which an offspring grows from the parent as an outgrowth or bud.
Budding
A spore is a cell that certain fungi, plants (moss, ferns), and bacteria produce. Spores are involved in reproduction.
Spore formation
Occurs when a body part is detached from the parent.
Regeneration
Horizontal stems at the base of a plant.
Runners or stolons
Specialized stems that grow underground.
Rhizomes
Underground stems with fleshy leaves or scales.
Bulbs
Fleshy underground stems or roots.
Tubers
Of some plants gove rise to young plants.
Leaf margin growths
Side shooters called _______ grow from the stem of the mother plant.
Suckers
Male and female sec cells or gametes are needed to produce an offspring. The two gametes (sperm and egg cell) unite to form a zygote, which grows into an individual.
Sexual Reproduction
Gametes are reporductive cells that unite during sexual reproduction to form a new cell called zygotes.
Gamete Production
A type of cell division in sexual reproducing organisms that reduces the number if chromosomes in gametes (sex cells, or egg and sperm)
Meiosis
