Q
  • Who were the Samaritans? When King Cyrus of Persia allowed the Jews held in Babylon to return to Jerusalem (539 BC), descendants of half Jewish half Gentile people in Jerusalem were driven out. They began a rival religion in the mountains north of Judea.
  • James and John offended because a Samaritan village rejects them for being Jews -
”Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to consume them” like Elijah did? They were using scripture to justify racism and genocide. (Should these 2 be apostles?)
  • Jesus: “Ye know not what manner spirit ye are of.”
  • “And they went to another village.”

Q
  • The Parable of the Good Samaritan is prompted by 2 questions:
  • Who is my neighbor? Two Jewish faithful (Levite and Priest) don’t stop to help the wounded man; the Samaritan stops, binds up his wounds, takes him to an inn, stays with him, and pays for his care.
  • What shall I do to inherit eternal life? The fall and redemption of mankind; Certain man is Adam; Jerusalem to Jericho is the Fall of Man; thieves (Satan); wounds (sins), half dead (spiritual death); by chance a certain priest… likewise a Levite (the law, the temple, the prophets can’t save Adam from the rall); Samaritan (Christ) came where he was (earth; bound up his wounds with oil and wine (Atonement); set him on his own beast; inn (church); took care of him; take care of him; when I come again (2nd Coming)

Q

Doctrinal Confidence Scale - we can be confident in doctrine which is repeated in scripture and repeated by leaders of the church from 1830-2025. We become less confident in doctrine which is not taught repeatedly in scripture and is not repeated by leaders, Statements of any single church leader or a single verse of scriptures does not create the doctrine of the church.
