2nd Half Of Menstral Cycle Flashcards
When does the 2nd half of the Menstral cycle begin?
Begins with ovulation days 14-28
Duration is about 14 days
What is the 2nd half of the Menstral cycle called?
Progestational, luteal, or secretory phase
What happens to the follicles during the 2nd half of the Menstral cycle?
Follicles rupture near the corpus luteum
What does the corpus luteum release during the 2nd half of the Menstral cycle?
Corpus luteum releases progesterone
What happens to the basal temperature during the 2nd half of the Menstral cycle?
Temperature increases
What other hormone is released during the 2nd half of the Menstral cycle?
LTH is released
What happens if a fertilized ovum is released?
hCG is released
What happens if an unfertilized ovum is released?
Menses will occur
What happens to the corpus luteum if not fertilized?
The corpus luteum will gradually decrease after 9 days
If the follicle ruptures, what happens?
The cells in the lining of the ruptured follicle multiply
Creates corpus luteum ( yellow body )
Luteinization is stimulated by an LH surge
What does the corpus luteum begin to release?
Progesterone
What happens 9-11 days after ovulation (days 25-26) if fertilization and implantation occur?
hCG is produced by the zygote, corpus luteum persists - maintained by LTH, progesterone will secrete for 3 months till the placenta takes over, corpus luteum will then gradually dissolve
What happens 9-11 days after ovulation (days 25-26) if there is no fertilization?
LTH subsides, corpus luteum degenerates, progesterone levels drop, menses begin, spiral arteries contract due to drop in progesterone & estrogen, blood supply to inner 2/3 of Endo is cut off, Endo dies & sheds
What happens on day 28?
Decreased estrogen levels & increased FSH
Process starts again
