2C - Energy and Matter Flashcards
How would a scientist define work?
Scientists define work as the result of a force acting on an object as it moves through a distance. Scientists also define it as a change in energy.
Define energy.
Energy is the ability to do work.
What happens to an object’s energy when work is done on it?
An object’s energy is changed when work is done on it.
What are the two kinds of mechanical energy?
The two kinds of mechanical energy are kinetic and potential energy.
When a skydiver jumps out of a plane, what factors determine each of the two mechancial energies?
Kinetic energy depends on the mass and the speed of the object. Gravitational potential energy depends on the mass of the object and its height above the level to which it could fall.

What happens to energy when it is used? What is this principle called?
The energy used in every process is changed into other kinds of energy or transferred to other objects. No energy is lost or gained. This principle is called the conservation of energy.
(True or False) An avalanche of rocks is dangerous because of the huge amount of kinetic energy it develops as the rocks fall.
