State what representation means
any means of communication by which people tell each other about people and places
Differences between informal and formal representations of a place
informal:
* subjective
* heavily influenced by the purpose of the representation (who it is for and why) and who created it
* creative, stylised
* does not necessarily reflect the actual world
formal:
* objective
* based on facts rather than feelings
