- Amine (NH2 group)
- Carboxylic acid group (COOH)
- H atom
- R group (a chain that causes amino acids to differ in function and properties)

- Peptide bonds (covalent)
- Hydroxyl (OH) from COOH is removed from one amino acid
- Hydrogen (H) atom is lost from the amine group of an amino acid
