2.9 Alkenes Flashcards
Define geometrical isomerism
A form of stereoisomerism where the two alkenes have the same structural formula but the bonds are arranged differently in space
Define position isomerism
Isomers with the functional group, the double bond, in different positions along the carbon chain
What is the angle between every bond in an alkene?
120 degrees
What is a pi orbital?
A cloud of electron density above and below the double bond
Are alkenes soluble in water?
No
What is the name of the type of reagent that attacks carbon carbon double bonds?
Electrophile
What is the most common type of reaction that alkenes undergo, because the double bond is so susceptible to attack by an electrophile?
Electrophillic addition
When drawing out a mechanism, what do the arrows represent?
Movement of electrons
What do the letters stand for in CHEET?
Concentrated sodium hydroxide (to provide OH- ions), hot, ethanol solvent, elimination, tertiary haloalkane
What are three products of an elimination reaction?
Alkene, water and halide ion
What are the pneumonics used to distinguish between nucleophillic substitution and elimination?
CHEET and PAWN
What do the letters stand for in PAWN?
Primary haloalkane, aqueous solvent, warm, nucleophillic
What are the two products of a nucleophillic substitution reaction?
An alcohol and a halide ion
