2.8 Passing on genes to the next generation Flashcards
What is inheritance?
It is when you pass on traits or characteristics onto the next generation.
What is a phenotype?
The phenotype is the characteristics or traits expressed by an organism.
What is a genotype?
It is the genetic instructions or DNA inherited by your parents.
What determines your phenotype?
Genotype and environment. (environment includes: climate, diet, excersise, exposure to chemicals).
What are alleles?
The alternative forms of a gene. e.g eye colour, hair colour.
How are dominant and recessive traits written?
Dominant: Uppercase letter.
Recessive: Lowercase letter.
What is a dominant trait?
It is a trait that only requires one allele to be present for it to be expressed.
What is a recessive trait?
A trait that is only expressed in the absence of a dominant trait.
What is a heterozygote?
An organism with multiple different alleles present.
What does homozygous mean?
Possessing only one type of allele.
Homozygous dominant: only having the dominant genes.
Homozygous recessive: only having the recessibe genes.
What does carrier mean (within inheritance)?
It is when you possess a particular gene.
