2.3 Discovering the structure of DNA. Flashcards
When was DNA discovered?
1869.
What is DNA made up of?
It is made up of repeating units called nucleotides.
What are nucleotides made up of?
They are made up of a sugar (deoxyribose in DNA), a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base.
What are the nitrogenous bases in DNA?
The nitrogenous bases are adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) or cytosine (C).
What is the structure of a nucleotide?
Phosphate and the nitrogenous base joined with sugar.
What is base pairing and what are the pairs?
Base pairing is the concept that nitrogenous bases must be bound to another base. (A) bind to (T) and (C) binds to (G). This means all strands of DNA have equal numbers of (A) and (T) and (C) and (G).
(Known as Chargaff’s rule).
