what is coronary heart disease?
-layers of fatty material build up inside coronary arteries, narrowing them, reducing blood flow in coronary arteries, lack of oxygen for heart muscle
what is atherosclerosis?
- walls of arteries become fumed up with fatty deposits narrowing them
what are causes of CHD?
-lifestyle factors e.g smoking, regularly drinking alcohol, foods high in cholesterol
what are stents?
- metal cylinder inserted into artery to maintain blood flow by keeping artery open
what are advantages of stents?
- lower heart attack risk
-last longer - quick recovery time
what are disadvantages of stents?
- operation risks e.g infection, heart attacks
- risk of thrombosis/blood clot near Stent
what is a statin?
- drugs that lower harmful cholesterol in blood, stops liver producing too. much cholesterol, reduce deposits of it
what are advantages of mechanical heart transplant?
- body doesn’t reject it
- emergency situations whilst waiting for donor
what are disadvantages for mechanical heart transplant?
- doesn’t last long
- not permanent
- cause infection
what are advantages of animal heart transplant?
- last longer
-less surgeries - less chance of infection
what are disadvantages of animal heart transplant?
-body can reject it
- long waiting list
- long term medication (immunosuppressant drugs)
