2.6 plant tissues/structure of leaf Flashcards
1
Q
what is the waxy cuticle
A
-outermost layer of plant
-waterproof prevents plant from drying out
-prevents excessive water loss
2
Q
what is the upper epidermis?
A
-transparent
-allows light to pass through to next layer
3
Q
what is the palisade mesophyll?
A
- photosynthesis
-cells contain chloroplasts which absorb light
4
Q
what is the vascular bundle?
A
- xylem and phloem
- transports water, mineral ions and sugar
5
Q
what is the xylem?
A
- made up of dead cells, holo tube
-transports water and mineral ions
6
Q
what is the phloem?
A
- made up of live cells, tube with end holes in it
- transport sugar from the leaves to the root of the plant for immediate use or storage
7
Q
what is the spongy mesophyll?
A
- has air spaces
- allows carbon dioxide and oxygen to diffuse through the cell
- any light missed by palisade mesophyll is absorbed
8
Q
what is the lower epidermis?
A
- contains stomata
- lets gases in and out of leaf
9
Q
what is stomata?
A
- air holes surrounded by guard cells
- let carbon dioxide in the leaf and oxygen out
- controls water vapour that passes out of the leaf
10
Q
what is transpiration and where does it take place?
A
- takes place in the xylem
- evaporation of water from the stomata of the leaf
11
Q
how does the plant replace water lost by evaporation?
A
- water moves up the stem through the xylem vessels and into the leaf
12
Q
in what direction does water move in the plant?
A
- one direction
- roots to the leaves
13
Q
how does the rate of transpiration increase?
A
- light intensity
-temperature
-air movement
-humidity
14
Q
what is translocation and where does it take place?
A
- movement of glucose from leaf to growing parts of the plant
- in the phloem
15
Q
in what direction does sugar travel in the plant?
A
- any direction
