2.3 the heart Flashcards
1
Q
what is the vena cava?
A
- brings deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart
2
Q
what is the pulmonary artery?
A
- carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs
3
Q
what Is the aorta?
A
- main artery
- carries oxygenated blood from left ventricle of heart to the rest of the body
4
Q
what is the pulmonary vein?
A
- carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
5
Q
what are valves?
A
- open and close to let blood flow from one are of heart to the other
- prevents back flow of blood due to gravity
6
Q
why is the left side of the heart thicker than the right side?
A
- left ventricle pumps blood to entire body so more pressure/force required ro pump blood
7
Q
describe the flow of blood/ corrculation in the blood
A
- deoxygenated blood pumped from heart to lungs to pick up oxygen
- oxygenated blood pumped to the heart
- heart then pumps oxygenated blood to the body
-oxygen and other useful substances diffuse into body cells - waste products picked up by the blood
-deoxygenated blood returns back to the heart where cycle starts again
8
Q
what does double circulatory system mean?
A
- blood pumps from the heart to the lungs and back and them from the heart to the body and back in a loop
- blood passes through the heart twice
