27) Unit 2 - Monitoring Populations and Measuring & Recording Animal Behaviour Flashcards
why do we measure populations
to assess the effects of environmental impacts
what can the presence, absence or abundance of an indicator species indicate
give information of environmental qualities such as presence of pollution e.g lichen
what is mark and recapture
a method for estimating population size
what is the formula for mark and recapture
N = (MC)/R
N=population size to be estimated
M= no* of members captured, tagged and released initially
C=no* of members captured in second sample (recapture)
R=no* of marked members in recapture
list 4 assumptions made when using mark and recapture
- all individuals have an equal chance of recapture
- there is no immigration or emigration during sampling time
- there is no birth or death during sampling time
- sampling method used each time is identical
Name different methods of marking
- banding
- tagging
- painting
- hair clipping
what consideration must be made when tagging
method of marking has to minimise the impact of the species being studied
what is ethology
the study of animal behaviour
what is an ethogram
a recording of all the observed behaviours shown by the species over a particular period of time e.g. eating, lying down, tail wagging
The description of behaviour recorded into the ethogram must be clear, ambiguous and not include ______
anthropomorphism
what measurements would a time budget include
Latency - time taken to respond to a stimulus
Frequency - of behaviour/activity
Duration - of behaviour/activity
what does using a combination of an ethogram and time budget allow?
allows the behaviour of different individual in a species to be compared
