25) Unit 2 - Sampling of Wild Organisms Flashcards
what considerations should be made when carrying out sampling/ How should sampling be carried out
- carried out in a way that minimises impact on wild species and habitats.
- consideration should be given to rare and vulnerable habitats that are protected by legislation
List the methods of sampling and which types of organisms they would be used to sample
- Transect Studies using quadrats for sessile and slow moving species
- Point count for birds
- Capture techniques for mobile species
- camera traps for elusive species
- scat sampling for elusive species
describe how a transect study is carried out
- A long line is placed where different samples can be taken
* quadrats are placed along transect allowing abundance to be recorded
what type of conditions is the transect line usually placed on
terrain or abiotic factors are changeable
describe what point count is
recording the number of birds seen and heard from a stationary point
describe what scat sampling is, and what sort of info is gained from this type of sampling
- indirect method where animals droppings are analysed
* provides info about abundance and diet
Name the types of sampling
- Random
- Stratified
- Systematic
Describe random sampling
individuals selected randomly from a larger population
describe stratified sampling
one larger population divided into smaller sub populations.
Then individuals are randomly selected from each sub population
described systematic sampling
taken at regular intervals e.g. every 2 meters along transect
