27: Cerebellum Flashcards
Cerebellum functions
Coordinates somatic motor activity, maintains equilibrium, assures smooth and orderly muscular contraction sequences
How is the cerebellum a “rheostat”?
Adjusts output of motor systems
Mnemonic for the fibers running through the inferior cerebellar peduncles
DDT Always Ruins Olives
Seven tracts through the inferior cerebellar peduncles
- DSCT
- Direct Arcuate Fibers
- Trigeminocerebellar Tract
- Arcuocerebellar Fibers
- Reticulocerebellar Fibers
- Olivocerebellar Fibers
- Central Tegmental Fasciculus
Corticopontine fibers: origin and termination
Motor cortex -> ipsilateral pontine nuclei
Three tracts through the superior cerebellar peduncle
- VSCT
- Trigeminocerebellar tract
- Tectocerebellar fibers
What do tectocerebellar fibers convey?
Visual and auditory info
Generally, what do cerebellar lesions cause?
Ipsilateral defects bc of extensive crossing and recrossing of tracts
Ataxia
Broad-based staggering gate
Korsakoff syndrome
Cerebellar ataxia and memory impairment due to EtOH abuse
Sensory ataxia
Caused by loss of sensory input, different from cerebellar ataxia
Dysdiadochokinseia
Inability to perform rapidly alternating movements (ex: quick pronation and supination of the hand)
Dysmetria
“Missing the mark” during tests, such as touching finger to nose to finger
Action (intention) tremor
Tremor that worsens with voluntary movements
Decomposition of movement
Breakdown of fluid, multi-joint patterns of movement, giving a robotic appearance
