15: Gross Brain And Brainstem Flashcards
What two major parts of the brain form the brainstem?
Midbrain + hindbrain
Damage to cerebellum
Issues with equilibrium, postural control, coordination
Gyrus, sulcus, fissure
Gyrus: ridge or cortex
Sulcus: groove between gyri
Fissure: particularly deep sulcus
Four prominent sulci
Central, lateral, parietooccipital, cingulate
Central sulcus
Between frontal + parietal lobe
Lateral sulcus (fissure)
Between frontal/parietal + temporal lobe
Parietooccipital sulcus
Between parietal + occipital lobe
Cingulate sulcus
Between limbic + frontal lobe
Homunculus
Somatotopic map that shows how our bodies are represented within our brains
Homunculus: foot to tongue pattern axis
Medial -> lateral axis
Homunculus: regions with increased receptor density….
Have a larger amount of dedicated cortical tissue
Gray vs white matter in brain
Gray: contains neuronal cell bodies + dendrites
White: collection of axons, many covered with myelin
Is cortex gray or white matter?
Layers of gray matter
Nuclei
Collections of cell bodies with common functions
Three types of fibers in central white matter
- Association fibers
- Commissural fibers
- Projection fibers
