2.6 - Weathering it well Flashcards
Name the mechanical types of weathering?
Frost shattering and salt crystallisation
Name the biological types of weathering?
Boring molluscs
Name the chemical types of weathering?
Chemical and seaweed acid
Explain frost shattering?
Water gets into cracks and when temperature reaches freezing, the water expand by 9% so then forces the rock to shatter apart.
Explain salt crystallisation?
Waves break on the cliffs but as the water evaporates it leaves behind sodium and magnesium compounds and as they grow they exert pressure on the rock casting it to fall apart.
What are boring molluscs?
They eat away at food and create holes in the rocks.
What does seaweed acid do?
The sulphuric acid from them, dissolves away the rocks.
What does oxidation do?
When iron minerals make erosion happen at a much faster rate.
Whats carbonation?
Slow dissolution of limestone due to rainfall.
Whats hydrolysis?
Minerals breakdown to form new clay minerals because of water.
Whats the relationship between climate and weathering?
