1.3 - Historical Discord (Cork) Flashcards
Which coast of Ireland is an example of a discordant coastline?
West cork coastline
At what angle does strata intersect at a discordant coastline?
90 degrees parallel
Why are there more bays and headlands found at a discordant coastline?
Rivers quickly erode the softer, less resistant rocks forming valleys which become drowned because of rising sea level. Waves then again come into contact with softer rock, continuing to erode away the bay.
What is another way through which bays ca be formed at discordant coats?
In the bays, wave crests curve to fill the bay and the wave height increases which means more erosion.
What happens at the headlands?
Straight wave crests become curved (refract); and concentrated on the headlands increasing erosion.
However, they can also spread out into the bay, depositing material eroded away from the headland, at the bay.
How are concordant coats different?
Strata runs horizontal along the coastline and with only one rock type for long expanses of the coastline.
How does tectonics play a role in concordant coastlines?
Tectonics has deformed and faulted the layers to create anticlines and synclines, so that the strata are tilted towards vertical in places.
What happens if rivers erode into the synclines?
Overtime the synclines become inundated due to rising sea levels.
If the anticline and synclines bands are orientated towards the coastline, what does it mean?
It’s a concordant coastline.
