2.6 Tissues, Organs & Organ Systems Flashcards
What is a tissue?
Group of cells specialised to work together to carry out a particular function
(Animal tissue) What is squamous epithelium?
Single layer of flat cells
(Animal tissue) where is squamous epithelium found?
Alveoli in the lungs
(Animal tissue) what is ciliated epithelium?
Layer of cells covered in cilia
(Animal tissue) where is it found?
The trachea where cilia wafts mucous
(Animal tissue) what is muscle tissue made up of?
Bundles of muscle fibres
(Animal tissue) what are the 3 types of muscle tissue and where are they found?
Cardiac - heart
Skeletal
Smooth - stomach wall
(Animal tissue) what is cartilage and where is it generally found?
Connective tissue
Found at the joints
(Animal tissue) what does cartilage shape and support?
The nose and windpipe
(Animal tissue) cartilage is formed when cells called chondroblasts do what?
Secrete an extra cellular matrix ( jelly like containing protein fibres) which they become trapped in side
(Plant tissue) why is the role of xylem tissue?
Transport water
Support the plant
(Plant tissue) what does xylem contain?
Dead hollow xylem vessels
Living parenchyma
(Plant tissue) what is the function of phloem tissue?
Transport sugars around the plant
(Plant tissue) phloem tissue is arranged in what?
Tubes
(Plant tissue) phloem tissue is made up of what?
Sieve tube elements
Companion cell
Some ordinary plant cells
