2.6 REFRACTION Flashcards
Refrection is
the change in speed and wavelength of light as it moves from one material to another
Density
decribes how closely packed the particles in a material are
щільність
The absolute refrective index, n, of a medium
is the radio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the medium
a number greater or equal to 1 which indicates a material’s ability to refract the light
Shell’s Law
sinA1n1=sinA2n2
n air =1
Normal is
a dashed line that is drawn perpendicular at 90 deg to any surface
Angle of Incidence (охоплення)
the angle measured between the incident ray and the normal sinA1
Angle of refraction
the angle measured between the refracted ray and the normal
CRITICAL ANGLE
The angle of incidence which produces an angle of refraction of 90deg
critical angle and total internal reflection

Total internal reflection
occurs at angles of incidence above the critical angle, when all the light is reflected inside the denser medium and no light escapes
n=1/sinA
