2.6 Prokaryotic Cell Structure Flashcards
Prokaryotic organisms are always:
a single-celled organism due to having few organelles and non-membrane bound organelles
DNA in Prokaryotic Cells
the structure of DNA in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are the same however prokaryotic cells do not have nuclei and so their DNA is free floating in the cytoplasm
Ribosomes in Prokaryotic Cells
the ribosomes found in these cells are smaller than those found in eukaryotic cells, they are 70S ribosomes so form simpler proteins than eukaryotic cells
Cell Walls in Prokaryotic Cells
this cell wall differs from those in plant cells as this cell wall is made from peptidoglycan, AKA murein
it is a polymer made from amino acids and sugars
Flagella in Prokaryotic Cells
Thinner and lacks the 9+2 arrangement that eukaryotic cells have
the energy supplied to rotate the appendage comes from the process of chemiosmosis
What are the differences between Prokaryotic Cells and Eukaryotic Cells?
Eukaryotic Cells contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, while Prokaryotic Cells do not.
The ribosomes in Eukaryotic Cells are also large than those in Prokaryotic Cells
