Prevalence
Total number of individuals infected in a population at
a specific point in time, no matter when the disease began
Incidence
Number of new cases of a disease, during a defined time period, in a population at risk for developing the disease
Outbreak
Sudden increase in occurrence of cases of disease in excess of what would normally be expected in a defined community, geographical area or season
Endemic
Amount of a particular disease that is usually present in a community (Ross river)
Epidemic
Rapid spread of disease to a large number of people in a given population within a short period of time (SARS)
Pandemic
Spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people
(COVID)
Emerging infectious diseases
Diseases that have not occurred in humans before. Mostly caused by zoonotic pathogens
Re emerging infectious diseases
Diseases that once were
major health problems globally, or in a particular country, and then declined dramatically
