2.6 Hormones and the Control of Plant Growth Flashcards
Where do shoots grow towards and what is this process called?
Shouts grow toward the light, called phototropism
Where do roots grow and what is that called?
Roots grow towards gravity, called gravitropism. Roots also grow towards water
What is auxin?
The hormone that controls phototropism and gravitropism
Name 3 things plants are sensitive to?
- light
- gravity
- moisture
Name 5 uses of plant hormones
- agriculture
- horticulture
- weed killer
- stimulate root growth
- encourage fruit to ripen
What can unequal distributions of auxin lead to?
Unequal growth of the plant, it will bend to one side
Who uses plant hormones?
Farmers and gardeners
Why is it important to use plant hormones correctly in agriculture?
If used incorrectly, plant hormones can cause damage to the environment, ex weed killers may kill more useful plants
What is the relationship between the amount of auxin on one side and the amount of growth on that side in plant roots?
The root grows more on the side with the least auxin
What is the relationship between the amount of auxin on one side and the amount of growth on that side in plant shoots?
The shoot grows more on the side with the most auxin
What happens when auxin gathers on the lower side of a root? What does this cause?
The upper side grows more, causing it to grow downwards and towards gravity
What happens when auxin gathers on the lower side of a shoot? What does this cause?
The lower side grows more, causing it to grow upwards towards the light
